It's a marketing strategy (scam) from the credit card company to get you to join.
The only way to get it to work for you is this:
1. read the front and BACK (fine print) of the coupon. read it twice so you understand it. It does not matter how long the flight is, short or long distance, it only matters what fares qualify for that offer.
2. call the airline and ask an agent "what fares qualify (from A to B) for this offer?
3. if the qualifying airfare (for 2, total) is the best deal, then go with it, "IF" you can find it to be available on the dates you want to travel
4. Be prepared that many times the airline has a lower "sale fare" than the fare offered for this companion ticket offer. This is what you have found with Delta, as you mentioned.
5. focus on the other benefits of using the credit card, if any, or if no other benefits, change credit cards.
