Default Will I need a credit card to check into a hotel/motel in the US?

Will I need a credit card to check into a hotel/motel in the US?
I'm not talking five star hotels. Planning on using mostly Comfort Inns or other similarly priced motels. Will the motel require a credit card when I check in, or do they still accept good old cash?
