Default can I use a British prepaid credit card to make online purchases in US

dollars, will the retailer convert it? Will retailers who trade using US Dollars as payment convert a payment made in Sterling automatically? Is it just a case of making sure you convert the charge to Sterling theoretically, and make sure you have enough in your account?
