The general rule of thumb is that unless it's an emergency, don't use the credit card on anything that won't be there when the bill arrives. For example, buying a round of drinks for everyone is a sure way to get yourself in bad debt.
And always, always pay on time. Even if it's a minimum payment, a late or missed payment not only hurts your credit score, but also gives the credit card company a reason to boost your interest rate through the roof.
Online payments through your bank's web site or the credit card company's web site is the safest way to make a payment. That way you have proof that you paid them. (If the postal service looses your check, how can you prove that you sent it?)
